THE BAND

After putting their stamp on several of Cracker Barrel’s Heritage Series CDs in early 2002, Linda and David Lay, along with David McLaughlin, decided to perform some shows together. At their first concerts at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., and at the Lowell Massachusetts Folk Festival, they received standing ovations and rave reviews. With these auspicious results, they have continued performing together.

Springfield Exit is now considered one of Virginia’s outstanding trio of singers. They perform original songs and a wide variety of their own arrangements of old standards and traditional songs and instrumentals pulled from a wide variety of sources, both traditional and new country, blues, swing, bluegrass, and folk.

Though two members are natives of Virginia, all three now live in Winchester in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley from whence they travel to just about anywhere. They have performed to audiences nationwide from Vermont to Washington state. In the last three years, they have performed on the stages at the Library of Congress, several National Folk Festivals, the Birchmere, Floyd Fest, Winchester’s Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival, the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, the General Jackson Showboat, the Wildhorse Saloon, Opryland Hotel, and many other important venues and stages.

Most recently, Springfield Exit has been added to the artist roster of the Virginia Commission For the Arts (http://www.arts.state.va.us/) for the 2008/2009 tour season.

LINDA LAY

Linda Lay began singing on stage when she was eight years old. She was born and raised in Bristol, Virginia, a city at the heart of one of the nation's richest breeding grounds for traditional musicians. She played in her family's string band, influenced by local traditional singers like Ralph Stanley, hearing echoes of one of the finest family bands in American music, the Carter Family. Linda grew up singing and dancing at the Carter Family Fold, a music hall at the Carter homestead at Hiltons, just west of Bristol. She traveled with her family's band until she formed her own group, Appalachian Trail, which performed together for two decades.

Blessed with a world-class voice, Linda has shared the stage with Commander Cody, Bruce Hornsby, Vern Gosdin and Mickey Hart of Grateful Dead fame. Whether she's singing jazz, country, gospel or bluegrass tunes, she continues to be a favorite on the folk festival circuit, performing concerts from coast to coast and overseas. She has twice been primary vocal instructor at Centrum Center for the Arts in Port Townsend, Washington. In 2006 Linda was chosen to be a Master Artist for the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities. Linda also plays bass with Springfield Exit.

Linda's popular country CD release by Cracker Barrel Country Store, "Miss Linda's Mercantile Store", got lots of air play and sold out nationwide. She is now the lead vocalist and acoustic bass player with Springfield Exit and resides with her husband David in Winchester,VA.

DAVID LAY

David Lay is a respected vocalist and rhythm guitar player in the folk, country, and bluegrass world. According to David McLaughlin, David is "one of the most solid rhythm guitarists I have ever played with." David comes from east Tennessee, but has traveled extensively around America and internationally and is admired for his fine delivery of folk and country songs. With wife, Linda, he has been a guitarist on several music tours, including the Masters of the Steel String Guitar. David is the rhythm guitarist and harmony vocalist with Springfield Exit.

DAVID MCLAUGHLIN

David McLaughlin has been a full-time and highly respected musician since 1978. Though David plays all kinds of music, he was a founding member of well-known bluegrass group, the Johnson Mountain Boys. With that group, he was twice nominated for a Grammy Award, and has won countless other awards, including IBMA, WAMA, and SPBGMA. David has spent thirty years touring the world, performing everywhere from the White House, the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, Madison Square Garden, Carnegie Hall, and the Grand Ole Opry, to Kala Academy in India. He has also made countless TV appearances in the USA and in several foreign counties. David is the producer and engineer of Springfield Exit's recordings and plays mandolin and lead guitar with the group. In addition to playing music, McLaughlin is also working on other projects and representing a newly restored historic property in Winchester, VA!
